Northern Lights is 90% Indica and it has all the qualities of that species that make it one of the most suitable cannabis strains for novice growers. The plant grows fast but remains short and bushy. It produces a moderately generous yield, but the buds are very potent. The compact size makes it ideal for indoor growing, but if you have a suitable space and the right climate, growing it outdoors will bump up your returns even more.
Indoors, the plant tends to grow to around 39 to 47 inches (100 to 120 cm) in height, although sometimes it can reach 63 inches (160 cm). It prefers a temperature between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 29.5 degrees Celsius), with the nighttime (lights off) temperature not going beyond 10 degrees from the daytime temp. Relative humidity can stay above 60% during the vegetative stage, but drop it down gradually by 5% per week afterwards. Because it is a photoperiod strain, you can decide when you want it to enter the flowering stage. Once flowers start to emerge, you can expect to harvest about 18 ounces (510 grams) per square meter in 8 weeks.
If you live in an area with a warm, balmy climate, you can choose to grow Northern Lights outdoors. It might try to grow to its maximum height of 7.2 feet (220 cm), but 6 feet (180 cm) is more likely. As mentioned earlier, you will not have to worry too much about pests and diseases. Nevertheless, it does not hurt to be careful. Keep the grow space clean and do not overwater the roots. In mid-October, the yield will be 20 to 22 ounces (575 to 625 grams) per plant – higher than it would be indoors.
Because this strain is not very fussy, you could even employ a perpetual harvest strategy if you wish. Use your indoor grow lights for the germination and vegetative stages, and natural lighting outdoors during flowering. That way, you can make the most of available light, lower your electricity costs, and enjoy multiple harvests throughout the year.
You will be glad to know that our Northern Lights seeds are feminized, which means you will only have female plants. You will not have to spend time separating any males or hermaphrodites. As this 2017 report states, males or hermies carry pollen that can damage your crop. Eliminating the male sex chromosomes also permits a higher THC content. In the case of this strain, you will get 18 THC%.
That high level of THC is due to the abundance of trichomes. These are the shiny crystals that can be found all over the dense, olive-green buds. You will also see some orange pistils, or tiny hairs, that contribute to the plant’s overall pleasing appearance.
