Because it is 70% Sativa, you can expect Purple Haze to grow tall and lanky. The leaves are thin and pointy, and there will be large gaps between the nodes. Sativas can be notoriously difficult to manage and take longer to mature than Indicas. This strain, however, is surprisingly easygoing and the flowering stage is relatively short at only 9 weeks (or late October if you are growing outdoors). It has a high resistance to all sorts of plant diseases and needs only basic TLC to survive.
Indoors, you can choose to grow it in soil or using hydroponics. During the vegetative stage, feed it mostly nitrogen with traces of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and manganese. As the plant starts to flower, you can cut back on the nitrogen and switch to more phosphorous. Purple Haze does not need too many nutrients. As long as it does not show any signs of nutrient deficiency such as yellow leaves or brittle stems, you do not have to go all-out on the feeding recommendations printed on your store-bought nutrient packages. Your biggest challenge will be the size of the plant.
As mentioned earlier, this strain can get pretty tall. If your indoor space has a high ceiling, more than 50 inches (1.3 meters), then you should be fine. Nonetheless, you might still want to control the vertical growth with a training technique like Screen of Green (SCROG). While the plant is still vegetating, bend the new shoots sideways so that they grow away from the main stem. Doing this exposes the bud sites on the lower part of the plant to more light and encourages a more abundant yield. With this method, you will be able to harvest as much as 19 ounces (540 grams) of usable bud per 3 square feet (1 square meter).
If you live in an area with a warm and sunny Mediterranean-like climate, you can grow Purple Haze outdoors. The height of the plant will be between 8 and 10 feet (2.5 to 3 meters) – quite gigantic, but this translates to a more massive yield of 14 to 16 ounces (400 to 450 grams) per plant. The cooler nighttime temperatures will also stimulate the plant’s anthocyanins. These are the pigments that produce the lovely violet and blue hues on the leaves and flowers. They also have potential antioxidant and anti-cancer benefits.
Our Purple Haze seeds are feminized to lessen the burden of identifying and separating any male plants. As this 2017 report explains, the presence of males will decrease your productivity. If your goal is smokable buds, you want an all-female crop because they are the ones that produce them, not the males. When harvest time approaches, the plants grown from these feminized seeds will generate plenty of dense, heavy nugget-like buds covered with purple hairs. You will also notice a coating of sticky white crystals, or trichomes. These trichomes are rich in THC and will tell you when it is time to harvest.
